Douro Valley

A UNIQUE SOIL FOR A UNIQUE WINE

The Douro Valley is a suggestive region crossed by one of the longest rivers of the Iberian Peninsula, which reaches the ocean after an impressive series of jumps and bends, it is also the oldest demarcated wine region in the world: the first “demarcation of the mountains“ was implemented in 1756.

The vines are planted in terraces, on the right bank of River Douro, most of them south-facing (high insulation), with some more than 80 years old vines.

The farms are bordering the river, where lower altitude ensures exceptional grape quality.

Our vines are ‘A-rated’, the highest quality grading conferred by the region’s wine regulatory body.

Soil

The schistous rock soil is ideal for the vines:

  • Different textures
  • With little organic matter
  • High quantity of solid elements
  • Good permeability for roots and water
  • High absorption of solar energy
  • Positive effect on maturation due to small decrease in daytime thermal amplitude
  • Low levels of organic matter, poor soils

Sustainability

The vineyards are treated in order to maintain the balance and resilience of the plants in harmony with the surroundings, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and future sustainability.

The old vines schist terraces have been built more than 100 years ago.The farms are located in this environment of outstanding natural beauty, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.
